page design

After deciding to create images from letters for the audience to colouring in i had to design a large amount of these as this was the bulk of my books content. I also had to find a replacement for the classification section of my book as in feedback students said they didn't think it was needed.

Ideas for things to replace classification section :
- notes pages
- more colouring pages
- further advanced anatomy
- summery of what they have learnt
- a different style of applying knowledge, different from colouring

after thinking of these i decided to ask a group of students to vote for which they think would be most beneficial of having. The results for this were notes pages 5, more colouring 2, further advanced anatomy 1, a different style of applying knowledge, different from colouring 4, summery of what they have learnt 0. From this i decide that a notes section is what would replace it with. This was an appropriate replacement as from the votes it was clear me that it is what the students wanted and that is important as they are the intended audience for my book. I also decided to include a section before colouring of a different style of applying knowledge because out of the 12 people i ask 4 said it would be a nice addition and something that would break up the book into another section.

Colouring pages

Above are 4 more of my colouring pages. When creating these i need to need in mind the side of the letters as i dont want them to be too small so it is hard to colour. I also dont want to make it too difficult as the colouring is a key part of help the audience remember and learn the anatomy.

When designing the image that would be for the serif colouring page i had to consider how i was going to go about this, if i left the letters all in baskivile then there would be a lot of colouring to do and would be very complicated. The other option was to change the typeface so that the serifs were not as hard to colour, but i had to make sure i didn't make it too easy.

Above is the image that i created for the serif colouring page. As you can see the majority of the letters are san serif which is in a helvetica type. To make sure the image wasn't too easy i had to add in lots of san serif letters to hid the serif letters they are trying to find.

The most important part of the book is the content that tells the reader all about the anatomy of type, because it is so important to the book i decided to try and keep the anatomy pages as simple as possible so that they were not cover complicated, and that the information is clear.

To keep the information clear i decided to limit the information down and only show what i thought was needed, i knew i had to include all of the basic anatomy terms and a few more advanced terms so that the students would get all that they need to know for a basic knowledge of anatomy of type.

what i deiced to include on the pages :
-examples of letters that have the part that the label is telling you about
-brief description of what part of the letter the anatomy is telling you about
-guid lines to clearing show senders, desired, upper case and lower case letters

Above are my designs for the pages that explain what each part it called. I limited the mass of information that i had read about down to just 3 pages for my book. All the type examples are set out on guid lines to help them understand the positioning of the letters. I used the colour that i identified in my book aesthetics to highlight there part of the letters that the term was describing. To help the audience along with applying this is used a select few of the letters that are in the related colouring page to give them a little guidance on what to colour. I thought this was appropriate as it helps the students with them knowing which will improve their confidence in their knowledge of type anatomy.
After designing these page i asked a student for their feedback to see if they also agreed that it was enough information to be given and their response was :
I think it is an adequate amount of examples as it gives a wide range of letters, and also has a brief description of which part of the letter the term is actually for. I like that the terms are side by side and the letters from each term are on the same line, is helps you make a quick comparison.

Design of additional applying knowledge section

Above are design for the additional applying knowledge section that was suggest i add. To make this section just as creative as the colouring section of the book i decided to use words and phrases that i selected different anatomy parts of, coloured and i left black labels from so that the student could fill in. I decided that this was an appropriate design as it is a different method to the colouring pages as instead f being told what to colour you are having to write what is coloured. I think this is a successful design as all students work differently, most of the books audience may get more rom this section than they do from the colouring section, and similarly the other way round, because of this is makes the book more open to a wider audience and style of learners.

Plan of action :
- design more colouring pages
-design more applying knowledge pages
-design title pages
-design notes pages
- answer pages
