developments

below are development for my bank note.

Above is my first design that i create on the theme of monuments and using security measures. the design uses three measures bar code, chip and passport chip, the idea behind this is the different places have a different scanner to check the note is real but no one knows which store/place has which scanner, in theory this would rue out forgeries as it would be nearly impossible to create a fake that would pass very scan, deterring people from using the fake notes. The above design uses the lines of the monument designs and links them to the text and chip creating the look of a circuit board. These lines would all be printed in gold to replicate this. The second layer of chip would be copper and this would create depth to the chip. The white strip across the design is to break up all the black and add interest. I thought this design worked well but i thought that the layout was lacking in something and didn't look very finished.

As my first design did not look complete and i was unhappy with the layout i looked back at my research to gain inspiration an alternative layout. I then found a note that had a white back ground and white edge around the note, i decided to experiment with this layout design and also experimented with using different monuments that i has drawn. I still wanted to include as many security measures as i could in my design, in the designs for the angel of the north and the shard i only included a bar code and chip as i could not find an appropriate place to put the passport chip. When developing these i found it hard to opposition things portrait as there was a lot of blank black space along side both of the drawings, but what i found worked really well with these designs is the placement of the text in the white space at the bottom, this highlighted the bank and also gave the chip space and was in a similar placement to that of it on a credit card, because of this i decided to keep the placement of the text and go back and experiment with a landscape note using the bridge drawing.

After deciding that i wanted to try the note landscape i created the above note design. i found that this was a lot more successful as the chip and bank information was separate to the imagery and created more of a focus on the image. i chose to keep the background of the image black and the lines of the drawing white as it created a large contrast that was eye-catching. I also added the pass port chip as the flag on the bridge drawing but this was in gold to much the actual co;lour of it on the passports and also the gold of the chip design. I found that this design worked better than the previous portrait designs and the imagery was allowed to spread out a lot more and travelled better across the page. the other text and security measures also were not as close together and therefore highlighted them and made them part of the design. The only design error i think i could alter on this note is the size of the '£5' as it is very small in both corners and is not very obvious.

After identifying the error of the size of '£5' i changed this by enlarging it and placing it the top right corner and turning the bottom left corner '£5' by 180degrees. By doing this it made the amount of the note more visible and made the note look complete.

I then decided that i wanted to design the reverse to the bank note, before design i decided to list things that i wanted to include on the note so that it made the production easier
i decided i wanted to include :
- the date the bank started up on, to promote the bank as a well established bank
- the bank logo, to make the note look official and represent the bank of england
- the amount, show the value of the note
- the angel of the north monument, a large long drawing that would fill the length of the box
- and coded numbers to create a pattern to the background, create a futuristic look as i am creating a note that is for future use and when i think of a pattern for the future i imagine coding and digital numbers.

After identifying these point i created the above note. I used a digital typeface for the numbers so that it looked like futuristic coding and also was difficult to replicate perfectly, i wanted this to be gold as i wanted it to stand out from the rest of the image and contrast with the angel of the north drawing. I also slightly changed the bank of england logo so that the women figure was folding a smart phone and not a leaf as i wanted to slightly bring the design into the 21st centrally without completely changing the logo design that has been the same for hundreds of years. In my opinion i think that this bank note design is successful as the theme is consistent from the front to the back and is a strong link.

change of idea

After changing my idea from the small bank notes representing all countries in the uk i decided i would focus on monuments in the uk and create a note that celebrates their beauty. I still really liked the idea of a square so i mocked up a quick design to see how my drawings would fit into the squard shape:

I when decided that the drawings would have to be very small to fit into the small shape and then the drawing would loose its detail when it came to printing in a traditional method.

After creating this i looked about over my research for more inspiration to see what i could add to my note to make it different and interesting. I came across my research into security of notes and security measure in other things such as chips and bar codes.

I decided to base my idea on the theme of monuments but also include a minimum of two security measures as in the future i think that bank note will need to improve their security so they are not easy to replicate.

book trial

Before printing my book in the digital print book i decided to print a trial of my book to see if the colour separations worked and lined up perfectly and if any other alteration needed to be made.

only 2 pages need change as the colour separations did not perfectly match. From printing this trial i also got and idea of just how well the pages followed and looked when physically printed and not just on a digital screen. After making change my book was then it was ready to print.

What a note needs

After researching bank note i found that all bank notes need to state which bank the note is from, what currency it is pound, euro, dollar etc, contain at least one security method, and also contain appropriate imagery that works as a set not only on the front and back of the note but across all of
the notes.

security research

Below are images that i found when researching security measure that different bank notes have.

the above bank notes use the following as security measures:
  • security thread (thin ribbon usually threaded through the paper vertically)
  • raised ink
  • image on both sides lined up perfectly
  • clear polymer window
  • holographic strip
Other security measures:
credit card chips

Visa chip cards are not only more secure, they are also simple to use. Chip cards and terminals work together to protect in-store payments. A unique one-time code is generated behind-the-scenes that is needed for the transaction to be approved - a feature that is virtually impossible to replicate in a counterfeit card.

You can still swipe your chip-enabled card using the magnetic stripe on the back of the card at merchants who haven’t yet updated their terminals
While U.S. credit and debit card users started getting notices about the switch to chip-and-PIN as early as 2014, users in other countries, such as Mexico, Brazil, and Germany, have already been using chip technology for several years. This technology has proven successful in reducing fraud in over 130 nations around the world.
Given the major hacks of credit card information in 2014 (for example, a whopping 56 million credit and debit cards were affected by a data breach at Home Depot in September 2014), the switch to chip technology is a big deal for U.S. consumers. Here are four major advantages of your new chip credit and debit cards.bar codes

Barcodes
Barcodes originally were scanned by special optical scanners called barcode readers. Later applications software became available for devices that could read images, such as smartphones with cameras.

Barcodes became commercially successful when they were used to automate supermarket checkout systems, a task for which they have become almost universal. Their use has spread to many other tasks that are generically referred to as automatic identification and data capture (AIDC).

below are different types of bar codes that are possible:

pass port chips

This symbol for biometrics is usually printed on the cover of such passports. A biometric passport, also known as an e-passport, ePassport or a digital passport, is a combined paper and electronic passport that contains biometric information that can be used to authenticate the identity of travelers.
To help speed up your time at passport control, there are now ePassport gates at all major airports in the UK. ePassport gates are automated, where a passport reader and camera, rather than a border officer, will verify your identity and check your ‘chipped’ passport.

Moving the chip which stores the holder’s details to the inside of the passport cover where it will no longer be visible. This gives additional physical protection as well as making it much harder to replace the chip without damage to the passport cover being spotted

book layout

After identifying that i am going to make my pages landscape, bind is with the Japanese stab stitch method and also clarified my sub headings and content i then started to design the page layout
below are my first developments of my page layout:

inicial layouts

i decided that i liked the look of the layout that i found when researching the 'steal like and artist' book and decided to also crate my pages in black with white text, using Futura Condensed Med for the bulk text and Future medium for the headings and titles. This worked well as the typeface was not a very considered and professional typeface unlike times new roman etc and was not as relaxed as comic sans, and worked well with the over all feel that i wanted for the book. I Decided that i not like the look of the numbers in Futura medium or Futura Condensed Med so i decide that a simple change to helvetica was more appropriate as the numbers of helvetica were a lot more legible than those of future.

I decided that changing the colour and style of the page for the next chapter would work well as the tips were getting more important that future the book went on so i thought the change would emphasise this. I also decided on orange as it was mentioned in my first crit that it would be an appropriate colour to use as it is associated with positivity.

below are the planned layouts for the final pages for my book, i have decided that i am going to go with a similar layout as the previous chapter as it is just and extension for that chapter, and it will be red as red could be considered as a more intense orange and will relate the the intensity of the tips increasing.

Below are the developments of my initial book pages:

I decided to change the layout of the first chapter to the same style of layout as the others as i though that it would create a constant flow and link and the colour changes would be enough to emphasis the intensity of the stages.

Above is the developed and finished pages of the last chapter.

above is the design of the doodle page, i decided to follow it on with still using the red for the text as it create a like to the previous page and still looks part of the book.

consideration of stamp
Above is the first development of the introduction/contents page, i crete this with the idea unmanned of design a stamp so stamp on the bottom of the introduction page as i though it would be effective and be a good reference of a stamp sign of approval symbolising that the project is finished. After design this i then decided that creating an accurate stamp with lettering in would be hard to achieve as creating sharp lines when lino cutting is very hard to create.

 final without stamp

after deciding that creating a stamp was unachievable and unnecessary i re worked the pages and created the above layout.

Below are the considerations of the text colour for the front page.

orange

black

Found it have to choose between orange and black as the orange was a good reference to the pages in the book and also made the book look positive straight away, But the black looked professional and informative, and informative is the look that i wanted to give front the book.

I then had to consider the colour of the paper that i would use for the front cover. As orange was a common colour in my book and had become a theme i though that it would be best suited.
I then case across a very nice shiny/shimmery paper on G.F SMITHS that i though would look very nice on the front f my book as it looked very inviting and positive, because of this i have decided that this would be that cover and back of my book protecting the title page.

monument drawings

Below are 3 monuments that i drew using illustrator.

the shard

angel of the north

london bridge

Stonehendge

I chose these 3 as there is a wide range of architectural structures, a bridge, sculpture and a modern day sky scraper andneolithic monument. I thought that these best represented the fast moving economy of the uk and are monuments that have impact on the landscape all in their own way.
