below are development for my bank note.
Above is my first design that i create on the theme of monuments and using security measures. the design uses three measures bar code, chip and passport chip, the idea behind this is the different places have a different scanner to check the note is real but no one knows which store/place has which scanner, in theory this would rue out forgeries as it would be nearly impossible to create a fake that would pass very scan, deterring people from using the fake notes. The above design uses the lines of the monument designs and links them to the text and chip creating the look of a circuit board. These lines would all be printed in gold to replicate this. The second layer of chip would be copper and this would create depth to the chip. The white strip across the design is to break up all the black and add interest. I thought this design worked well but i thought that the layout was lacking in something and didn't look very finished.
As my first design did not look complete and i was unhappy with the layout i looked back at my research to gain inspiration an alternative layout. I then found a note that had a white back ground and white edge around the note, i decided to experiment with this layout design and also experimented with using different monuments that i has drawn. I still wanted to include as many security measures as i could in my design, in the designs for the angel of the north and the shard i only included a bar code and chip as i could not find an appropriate place to put the passport chip. When developing these i found it hard to opposition things portrait as there was a lot of blank black space along side both of the drawings, but what i found worked really well with these designs is the placement of the text in the white space at the bottom, this highlighted the bank and also gave the chip space and was in a similar placement to that of it on a credit card, because of this i decided to keep the placement of the text and go back and experiment with a landscape note using the bridge drawing.
After deciding that i wanted to try the note landscape i created the above note design. i found that this was a lot more successful as the chip and bank information was separate to the imagery and created more of a focus on the image. i chose to keep the background of the image black and the lines of the drawing white as it created a large contrast that was eye-catching. I also added the pass port chip as the flag on the bridge drawing but this was in gold to much the actual co;lour of it on the passports and also the gold of the chip design. I found that this design worked better than the previous portrait designs and the imagery was allowed to spread out a lot more and travelled better across the page. the other text and security measures also were not as close together and therefore highlighted them and made them part of the design. The only design error i think i could alter on this note is the size of the '£5' as it is very small in both corners and is not very obvious.
After identifying the error of the size of '£5' i changed this by enlarging it and placing it the top right corner and turning the bottom left corner '£5' by 180degrees. By doing this it made the amount of the note more visible and made the note look complete.
I then decided that i wanted to design the reverse to the bank note, before design i decided to list things that i wanted to include on the note so that it made the production easier
i decided i wanted to include :
- the date the bank started up on, to promote the bank as a well established bank
- the bank logo, to make the note look official and represent the bank of england
- the amount, show the value of the note
- the angel of the north monument, a large long drawing that would fill the length of the box
- and coded numbers to create a pattern to the background, create a futuristic look as i am creating a note that is for future use and when i think of a pattern for the future i imagine coding and digital numbers.
After identifying these point i created the above note. I used a digital typeface for the numbers so that it looked like futuristic coding and also was difficult to replicate perfectly, i wanted this to be gold as i wanted it to stand out from the rest of the image and contrast with the angel of the north drawing. I also slightly changed the bank of england logo so that the women figure was folding a smart phone and not a leaf as i wanted to slightly bring the design into the 21st centrally without completely changing the logo design that has been the same for hundreds of years. In my opinion i think that this bank note design is successful as the theme is consistent from the front to the back and is a strong link.
