leaflet trials

The basic idea of my leaflet is that it is a flat piece a4 paper that contains instructions to guid you on how to create a one piece booklet fold/8 page zine fold, and turns into a booklet by the consumer following the instructions and interesting with it. The target audience for this leaflet is students 12+ who are wanting to create a booklet, i have chosen the age 12 as a starting point as i think that any younger then the wording of the instructions would be too complicated and they would struggle to understand them.

From identifying this i then worked out a plan of the instructions that i was going to include in my leaflet so trail to see if they worked.

Steps:
Step 1 - Vertically fold both the 1 and the 2 corners over to their matching numbers, with this side up and create a crease down the vertical side,
Then unfold.

Step 2 - Horizontally fold both 1 corners over on to the 2 corners, also this side up and create a crease horizontally across, then unfold.

Step 3 - Fold the left side 2 and 1 corners towards the centre 3s but fold round the back of the page instead the front, making sure the side of the paper is perfectly in line with the vertical crease.

Step 4 - Fold the right side 1 and 2 corners towards the centre 3s, making sure the side of the paper is perfectly in line with the vertical crease just like you did with the other side, then unfold.

Step 5 - Once again horizontally fold the paper matching the 1s and 2s with their matching corners, like in step 1.

Step 6 - Cut along the centre crease all the way along to the number 4.

Step 7 - Unfold and fold horizontally, again matching the 1s with the 2s

Step 8 - Holding both ends, push the paper together so it creates the shape of the letter ‘x’, next push the booklet flat creating a rectangle.

Step 9 - Now open on the page that says back on the left page and front on the right side. Proceed to fold the back as well as the rest of the booklet that is behind it, behind the front and recrease the spine. Your booklet is now complete.

Above are my instructions that i have written up, i have used numbers that will be signed to corners of the page so it is easier and quicker for the consumer to know which corner need to match.

here is a quick design that i created to test it the instructions would work on a page. I then trailed it to see if the instructions were followable.
i then added the words front and back to the layout so that it was clear which would be the front and the back of the booklet.

below are images of me trailing the instructions

The trial worked really well as i followed the instruction closely and managed to create the intended booklet. I will have to look at the instructions are and one or two words are a little mixed up, but the over guidance still works. although the instructions say in step 3 to fold to revers although the 3's are on the front, this was a design mistake that i will change as it would work a lot better on the back so that the instructions were a lot more accurate.

I then went on to correct this mistake and also change the style of the numbers so that they were emphasised a lot more to improve the clarity of the design.

FRONT

BACK

I then decided that i wanted to make the front and back a lot more obvious by making one simple colour change.
By doing this it made a clear separation between the front and back of the booklet as well as keeping with the simple design.

I then trailed this design (only using the one side as my printer did not print double sided)

The leaflet yet again worked well and the instructions were easy to follow. A few alterations still are needed to be made as the instructions were still now perfect to understand, and the placement of the black slightly need to move over to the left so it does not over lap onto the front page, as well as moving up the centre line so that it goes along the horizontal crease perfectly.
