OUGD405 - Studio brief 2, Study task 3 Splink video

As a study task we were asked to choose a public awareness video to watch and then collect information from the then later design a leaflet on the same topic.

- dates from 1976
- Explains to young children how to cross the road by using 'slink'
- "in 1975 the number of children reported killed on the roads had fallen to 505, the lowest since then
1950's. By 2003 the figure was as low as 171 children"
- as many as 3,929 children being seriously injured on the roads each year the work of the road safety campaigns is far from over"

SPLINK
S - SAFE PLACE TO CROSS
P - PRAVEMENT STOP THERE
L - LOOK AROUND FOR CARS AND LISTEN
I - IF TRAFFIC IS NEAR LET IT PASS
N - NO TRAFFIC NEAR, CROSS
K - KEEP LOOKING AND LISTENING

The information i got from the video was very limited and has lead me to do further research.

On the road wise website i found a detailed list of the things to remember when crossing the road:

This information is useful as it gives a detailed step by step of how to cross the road, where not to cross and most importantly the places you should cross. Although this information is useful it is not appropriate for the people at risk as children are the target audience of this information but this is very lengthy and not 'fun' and children friendly.

The most recent road safety video is the video 'stayin alive' and was a group of hedgehogs singing along to a tune, singing about how they know how to cross the road and where to cross safely

These videos were a series of sort adverts that showed the hedge hog learning to cross the road. These videos were successful as they were fun to watch and the children could relate to although the characters were cartoon hedgehogs, the characters were young and wanted to get to park safely, meet there friends etc, exactly what the target audience wanted.

Facts about injuries and accidents that involved children crossing the road
In every region of the UK, young people are more likely to die or suffer life-changing injuries on the roads than any other age group.
Department for Transport data shows that the number of deaths and serious injuries in 2011 was 21% lower than the average for 2005-09.
In 2011, 2,412 children aged 0-15 years were killed or seriously injured on Britain's roads – that’s an average of 7 children every day. There were 60 child fatalities in road accidents in 2011. Although this figure is 53% lower than the average for 2005-09, it is 9% higher than the 2010 figure.
In 2012, more than one in every five children between the ages of 5 and 15 who were killed in traffic crashes were pedestrians.
Pedestrians ages 65 and older accounted for 20% of all pedestrian deaths and an estimated 9% of all pedestrians injured in 2012.

From these facts i have found that young children up to the age of 15 are most at risk of being in an accident from crossing the road incorrectly. This is why i am going to aim my leaflet at children 3-7 years are these are the most influential age group and if they learn at  young age they will know for the res of there lives.
