OUGD405 Studio brief 1 - Way finders research

Signs

Margret Calvert - Road signage
Margaret Calvert was one of Richard jock Kinneir’s students at chelsea school of art. In later years he asked her to work with him on designing signage as his assistant, they were then ask to create signage for Britain’s motorways. In 1958  the signage was tested on preston by-pass in Lancashire. After the successful installation the road signs were commissioned in 1958 to be put on every motorway in Britain, which later became the law in the 1965.
warning signs are in triangles

Creative way finders that are successful

Above is a very colourful set of signs that are from Dubai, the directions are in two different languages which is useful for visitors. The design is very basic as it only tell you the direction of one given place with the places title and an arrow pointing in which direction it is in but the sign is very large and the lack of design put emphasis on the information that is featured in the signs, which is the most important part of the design.

Above is an example of signage design that shows that is on each floor, as it is for a library eat coloured rectangle is colour coded to a book genre in which the signs is showing you which direction and floor you need to do on to find that genre section. it also has pictograms that show that floor the toilets are on and what kind of toilets they are eg. male, female, disabled, baby changing.
The colour coding works really well on this sign as the fictions are coded this can be carried over the the shelves the books are on and also be on the book to make it more efficient to find the book you were looking for.

Above is an example of a sign that is positioned in the entrance of building. The sign gives you the information of what is on every level. At each level the relevant level on the sign have a white background with blue text, and the other levels are blue background with white text. The sign is every legible and the placement is good as you see it as soon as you enter, also it has all the information you will need about each floor so you can work out where you need to be straight away. The sign also includes small pictograms that are all contained in a small white box, they are all put in line with each other so there is a clean look about the design.

pictograms - images/symbols that warn, guid or protect and need to be immediately decipherable. they must get right to the heart of the matter by visually conveying a vital piece of information in such a way that it cannot be misunderstood, and they should therefore be internationally recognisable and independent.

semantics - have a sign and meaning, dependent on context, knowledge, society and culture

sytactics - formal, unambiguous and succinct - form, brightness, colour, movement, material, scale, position and shape

pragmatics - indicative, imperative, suggested
