studio brief 1 research

Out of the previous events that i listed i decided to research leeds german christmas market and millennium square. I have chosen these as they are both in the place, a space which i enjoyed by many people in the centre of leeds.

Millennium Square
Millennium Square is Leeds’ award winning city centre outdoor public space and live entertainment venue. Situated in front of Leeds Civic Hall in the heart of the civic quarter and surrounded by some of the city’s other most significant and iconic buildings; this unique space is accessible to all - and hosts a varied programme of year round events.
Built as Leeds' flagship project to mark the year 2000, the venue is now widely renowned as a multi-functional live event venue hosting a wide range of year round events and activities including; the annual Christkindelmarkt German Christmas market, Ice Cube outdoor temporary ice rink, Yorkshire Food & Drink Festival, City Beach together with various multi-cultural and community celebrations including; Leeds Pride, Vaisakhi and St Patrick’s Day celebrations.

Leeds german christmas market
Christkindelmarkt, Leeds is one of the most established German Christmas Markets in the UK, with traditional wooden stalls, festive greenery. A  Christmas carousel ride and twinkling colourful lights all create a unique continental festive atmosphere in the heart of Leeds city centre for Leeds Christmas Market.
Set in the stylish civic setting of the award winning Millennium Square, Christkindelmarkt attracts many hundred thousands of visitors to Leeds each year and forms an integral part of the city’s annual events programme.
The market consists of over 40 wooden chalet stalls from authentic German traders providing a wide range of seasonal gift ideas for everyone including; handcrafted toys, jewellery, Christmas cards and festive decorations, speciality foods and traditional German delicacies such as gluhwein, bratwurst sausages, goulash, soups, schnitzels, stollen, gingerbread and candied fruits.
Established in 2002, the Market is a partnership between Leeds City Council and Frankfurt Am Main (City Council) in Germany.

Out of the two events/event spaces i decided that i will base my poster on leeds german christmas market as millennium square was a popular event space chosen by other students when discussing. i also thought that the handcrafted design style of traditional print methods would lend itself to the event as a range of handcrafted products are on sale at the market.
