binding mockups

When researching binding methods i came across a very helpful book binding channel on youtube that shows you step by step on how to make several different binding techniques, which i found very useful as i was unable to book a binding refresher as they were all full. I had previously had book binding sections and also make books in my own time so i wasnt too worried but still didn't know how to made a hard cover signature book.

Above is a mock up that i make practicing the signature binding method. This binding method was hard to understand at first as if was important the you had a signature of no more than 4 pages so that the signature was not too thick to bind. After following the video on youtube and completing the above mock up i was confident that this binding was the right binding for my book. I decided that i t was the most appropriate binding method as the binding made the pages strong, the book could lay flat so that it was easy to write and colour in. The thread i used for this prototype was a simple white but i am not limited to this. When considering using a alternate colour i remembered the colour scheme that i earlier decided on, which was black, white , yellow, red and blue. i thought that using blue, red and yellow thread together for binding would be a nice touch as i choose those colours as it was a link tothe anatomy of type as the terms they are learning in the book as what makes up a letter and these three colours and the main colours that make up every other colour. Below is a mock up of binding using all 3 coloured threads :

After using all three thread together i decided that this was what i was going to use to bind my book as the colours link to he content inside.

After creating this mock up i had to consider the page size.

book size :
"The standard book size is six inches wide and nine inches tall (6"x9")"
The above statement is what i found to be the standard size of a book, when thinking about what size i think is the most appropriate i took this into consideration and decided that and A5 book would be the right size. As it is aimed at students i dont want to make the book too big or bulky as they may be put off my the size. If i make my book a5 it would be small enough to fit in any students bag to it will be a nice travel size as well as still being larger enough for the printed information.
