When considering binding methods i looked at a rang of different methods and style to find which would be appropriate for the style of book and purpose. Before researching style of books i created prototypes on the binding methods that i ready knew how to do, to see if any were appropriate.
Saddle stitch
Concertina with hard cover
Japanese stab stitch
The purpose of the book is to be educational so the book need to be hard wearing as it is for students and if it wasn't it would get ruined duet having to carry the door to an from places, the Above binding methods with the exclusion of the hard cover concertina book are not hard wearing as their front covers will only be durable for a short amount of time. As well as durable the book also need to be a compact size so that it is easy to transport and at a good size to read, because of this it rules out the use of a concertina book as these are hard to read if you do not have a surface to either lay or stand it on. Below are binding methods that i found when researching other methods that i think would be fit for this purpose.
This binding method is signature bound with a hard cover, that wraps around all sides. I think this binding method would we appropriate as the hard cover that wraps around it will protect the pages from damaging in transport, which would preserve the book for as long as possible.
Above are a few variations of the first binding method. These are good examples of how the glitches can be changed to create a different effect down the spin as well as showing open spins and covered spines. With signature binding you have to consider the amount of pages that you are going to have as it if preferred that they are an even number of pages per separate signature, and is recommended to 8 pages = 4 sheets of paper.
This binding method is signature bound with a hard front and back cover, and elastic to keep the book shut, this is a good idea as the book it kept shut so that there will be less potential of damaged pages. This is ideal as it will keep the book in good condition for as long as possible. A benefit of signature binding is that the pages open flat so that it is easier to read when laid flat on a table.
The spiral binding method is a good example of binding that could be used as similar to the advantage of signature binding it too can be laid flat on a table so it is easy to read from, it also doesn't limit the amount of pages the book needs, and the pages can be removed.
From this research i have decided that a signature binding method with a hard cover would be the most appropriate as the binding method is strong, the hard cover is the most effective way of protecting the pages and also this method of binding allows the book to be laid flat which allows easy when reading.
