Brief 7 - Modernism look book - Defining the Brief and Research Analysis

Brief:

For this brief i will be making a volume 2 of a look book that I made for cop2 practical.

The original brief for the modernist look book was to create a publication that promoted modernist designs of today as well as informing people what modernist graphic design look like. I have decided to do this brief again as i have a strong interest in modernism and originally the look-book did not live up to its full potential as it was created in a short time window and was not made as well as it could have been, because of this i intend to update the original look book as well as create a second volume of the book as a continuation. The intended audience of these look books are students and young professionals who like modernism or who are interested in it as graphic design. The other purpose of the look book is to show that modernism is still about in design and is very strong and popular in graphic design today. Similar to my first modernist look book I have decided to continue using certain requirments when designing, I must use a san serif typeface to make it appropriate with the overarching theme of modernism as well as using a grid/guideline when designing as this is a key feature used in modernist deisgn but also it will help my design be consistent.

Research Analysis:

In the above poster, it clearly shows attributes of the modernist style, with its use of a grid to give an order to the type making the poster legible. The poster also uses a san serif type, and use of colours . A key feature of this poster that makes it obvious that it is modernism is the use of shapes to represent an image. The use of shapes to represent images is metonymy as it is for a represenational purpose only.

In the above poster, it uses key techniques that swiss modernism used to create it highly successful style. The design is successful as the information is clear to read and can be read in a logical order, but also adds interest by changing the direction of the grid used. Antithesis is used in this image to contrasting the colours blue and white as well as the shapes that contrast with the typography.

Hyperbole is used in the poster above because the red is used as
exaggeration to reprsent blood or missing fingers. This poster also personifies shapes to represent human features and characteristics to communicate its message of not petting pitbulls.

The poster above uses personification of shape to represent humans features such as hands, heads and eye balls, through this use of personification of shape the poster is created in a moderist style of design.

Above are images of my original look book design. In reflection of this look book there are a few select features that I will be keeping for the redesign. Aspects of this look book that I want to redesign are the front cover, as I would like to create a simpler design that reflects the content more, as well as changing the layout of the pages to make better use of the space that shows off the artwork. An aspect that I will keep for this design is the colour theme for this look book, the navy blue has a nice contrast with the white pages as well as the colour pieces of art. In the redesign of the original look book I will be using the same artwork, and for the second volume of the look book I will need to collect a similar number of artist and designs that create modernist style work.
