Brief 7 - modernism look book, original modernism look book research and development

information from "visual research" by Noble and Bestley extract

semiotics, deconstruction or communication
research methods
visual matrices, typologies, visual overlays and what might be termed x-ray methods to reveal variations and changes in form and composition across sets of visual material

visual conparisons
review, comparison and analysis of the existing visual material within the area that the designer is planning to produce new work
For commercial design, that maybe focused on a review of existing products and for marketing common trends, styles and coventions

new design work will need to take account of such conversations, weather to maintain a sense of originality by avoiding common cliches

Typology
Qualitative and quantitative analysis
Qualitative: reading of images and visual signs through semiotic analysis is a qualitative act in itself: although the responses can be evaluated statistically or numerically as a form of quantitative analysis, the initial data gathered is based on human reaction to the visual forms and experiments presented.
Quantitative: analysis is based on mathematical principles, in particular statistical methods of surveying and interrogating data (counting, in other words). By generating a batch production of visual forms to test, the designer can place these objects in specific locations in order to compare the range of positive and negative responses from a target audience.

in research make mistakes, you can only figure out what works by determining what doesn’t work
“I have not failed. Ive just found 10,000 ways that won’t work” Thomas Edison

Artist research

Heads of State Heads of state is a graphic design studio based in america, there work contains a large amount of modernism within it especially there posters and illustrations. The imagery that is shown for the Boston and Brooklyn Runners Guide are great example of there colourful and playful illustrations.

Olly Moss Olly Moss is a interesting and colourful poster designer, he creates amazing and simple posters related to a wide range of films. The style of the poster fits seamlessly into the genre of the film and every poster if different and unique from each other weather there part of a range or a lone piece. Olly’s work is an amazing example of contemporary modernism influenced design today, as his posters are all basic and made with simple colours allowing for some amazing posters to be produced.

NateWilliamss
Nate is a artist and designer who created a lot of modernist style illustrations and designs. He primarily uses simple shape illustrations and simple representations similar to Swiss modernist shape work, he also creates a variety of pieces in which the colouring of the typography allows for it to become part of the image. His work is very simplistic overall allowing it to appeal to all age groups, this is a unique style to achieve because it is very difficult to create a piece of work that can be accessed by all audiences.

Milton Glaser Milton Glaser is a very versatile and experienced designer that has created many iconic pieces of graphic design such as the I heart NY advertising campaign and the famous and colour Bob Dylan poster. What makes Milton an amazing graphic designer is his versatility in creating such a wide range of different pieces of graphic design.

Joseph Muller Brockman Brockman was a architect and a designer, who specialised in simple designs and using clean typography to amazing pieces of design. He is recognised for his concert posters for the Tonhalle concert hall in Zurich in which primarily used simple shapes and colours to represent the performances and music been conducted with in the concert hall.
