perfect bind (magazine bind)
binding method suggested in crit, would allow for pages to be added, and thread could be garden twine. (not sure of binds name)
(inspiration for bind above)
perfect bind with tape spine (taped magazine bind)
When deciding on the binding method i experimented with a selection of different methods. The first method was the booklet bind that was sewn at the spine, this method limits the amount of pages that the publication can have has it needs to be a multiple of 4. This method also it not a traditional magazine binding method as it not easy to mass produce. When researching binding methods i came across a method this used elastic or thread on the outside to attach the pages together. I was mentioned in a tutorial that using garden twine would look nice and be in keeping with the theme of the magazine, but when trailing the method with thread it was unsuccessful as the pages were not very secure and would need to be a high gsm paper to not tear or break near the thread. After this experiment it trailed the perfect magazine bind using two different method, the first was the perfect bind where the front cover wraps round, and the second where a tape like strip is added over the spine for strength. Both methods needed the stack of pages binding by pva glue applied to the spine edge. The tape perfect bind created a rustic effect that would be misplaced on my magazine that is supposed to be sleek. The perfect bind with the wrap around cover was the most successful as there was no uneven open edges creating a sleek smooth cover that reflected the inside content. The magazine bind is also very appropriate as a very similar method is used when a magazine is mass produced.
