Brief 5 - Clothing brand - Brief and Research

For this brief, I wanted to explore how I could undertake, creating the full spectrum of an indie clothing brand products and marketing, that allowed me to use my knowledge of branding and implement it in a professional and realistic way. When undertaking this brief I  had to keep in mind the audience as I needed to aim it at the appropriate audience for the brand that I created. Crucial research for this brief was my research into indie clothing brands, the types of people who wear them and also relevant items of which I applied the branding to. The key starting point of this brief was my survey and then the research which led from that. I have chose to complete this brief over one week as I thought that it was enough time to create a brand as well as pushing myself to work quickly which is what you would expect within a professional environment, and is how I wanted to conduct myself thought out this brief.

A key part of my research to determine the tone of my brand was research into Indie Clothing branding as they have become very popular recently with the rise of contemporary Streetwear, as sports wear clothing has become increasingly diverse in style which allows many people to dress in these styles regardless of its functionality. Many of these brands design popular items such as hoodies, bomber jackets, leggings etc.

One of the brands that make's clothing in this sort of style is Hype. Hype began as a self-funded project designing printed clothing and accessories. With the use of modern social media networking Hype quickly grew into a large brand and ever-expanding ranges. This brand was important to reference when developing a similar brand as it was an excellent example of seeing how a large brand began at its roots but also, more importantly, a good example of why brands that follow there intended purposes are successful.

Another successful brand I looked at was Supreme. Supreme is a brand developed in New York by skaters and artists to create clothes they liked. The brand quickly grew to be an embodiment of the downtown culture, over the years the brand has become very culturally successful creating merchandise in every field imaginable. However supreme has become a brand that is sought out because of its value and not its look or functionality. This is why I believe it is important to create a brand that has intended purpose of use unlike many new indie brands are aiming to replicate Supreme’s value without building up to this stage.

Similar to supreme, Palace has also become a brand that is sought out because of its value and not its look or functionality. Palace is an independent skateboarding brand representing modern-day UK skate culture, reflecting its rapid rise it has become very successful in the skate community but also in the fashion community as it has been warn by many famous celebrities such as Rihanna and Jay-Z. With the lime light of some of the worlds biggest influencer,s the brands collections have become high in demand causing the prices of there simple clothing to sky rocket. Reflecting on this I believe it is important to produce a brand that does not focus on popularity and price but rather on its functionality and simple yet effective designs.
