Brief 4 - Penguin Random House Student Design Award 2018 - Research

For the Penguin Random House student brief, I chose to work on the Adult Non-Fiction Cover which was A Brief History of Time by Steven Hawking. I chose to work on this brief for two days as the work required for this brief is relatively small.

To start my research for the book cover I looked for a synopsis of what the book was about. From this research, I found that In A Brief History of Time, Steven Hawking writes in non-technical terms about the structure, origin, development and eventual fate of the universe, which is the study of astronomy and modern physics. He talks about basic concepts like space and time, basic building blocks of the universe and fundamental forces that govern it. Once I knew what the book was about I moved on to research and look at past covers for this book. Most of the covers I found were from the 1990’s and the design reflected so, as the design of the generation was very dark and bold, with a limited reflection of the book's content. From this, I decided that I would design a cover that reflected the content but in a simple symbolic way.
