Brief 4 - Penguin Random House Student Design Award 2018 - Development and Final Cover Design

I began designing covers that used a simple line and shape illustration of our galaxy that contained limited detail. With this design I could vary its orientation and positions, allowing me to create a wide range of different design developments.

Inital design experimenting with hierarchy or type and positioning of galaxy illustration. This design is effective

Continuing experimenting with hierarchy or type and positioning of galaxy illustration.

A version which is a variation of the two above combined.

Main book cover title scaled to a larger size with a  variation of the positioning of the galaxy behind the typography.

Experimentation with no type overlaying the positioning of galaxy illustration.

Final experimentation filling up a larger amount of blank space.

After creating a range of designs I decided to gather some feedback to see which design I should develop further. From the feedback I received, they said that the most successful part of the designs was the type composition, where Stephan Hawking’s name was at the top of the cover above the title, with the title in the middle of the page and ‘the phenomenal international bestseller’ at the bottom. The most successful composition of the design was the larger illustration of the galaxy where the planets have been aligned to create the impression of hands on a clock, which is a representation of the time element within the book. From this feedback, I developed a design that incorporated the successful type composition with the successful imagery composition for my final design.

Above is my final book cover design which was a product of feedback which I received on my original developments, to clarify this design would work well on the front of a book cover I applied the design to psd mock-ups allowing me to view a realistic representation of what it would look like. Once I had viewed the completed mockup I was happy with the design that I created and I believed it would fit its purpose as a cover that reflected the content but in a simple symbolic way of which I set out to do, because of this I decided to submit this cover too the penguin random house awards. In my opinion I believe this book cover is successful as it for fills the intended design style of which I chose from research into other past designs of the book cover bringing it to a more simple and modern design. I believe the black and white format of the cover design to be successful because the two colours contrast each other making the book cover simple yet eye-catching as well as representing the darkness of space and time.
